HAZWOPER Hazmat - Technician/Specialist/Incident Command (24 hours)
Course Description
OSHA mandates that businesses operating sites with limited exposure to hazardous materials provide 24 hours of initial training for employees, managers, and supervisors. Additionally, individuals who occasionally visit such sites may also require a level of HAZWOPER training. While these workers may not face the same high levels of hazardous substance exposure as those engaged in regular cleanup activities, their training is crucial to ensure compliance with safety practices and minimize the risk of injuries and health hazards. J.A.S. Training offers the HAZWOPER 24-Hour Course for All Industries to meet these mandatory training requirements.
Note: Students are also required to obtain additional site-specific training and at least one day of field experience under the direct supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor.
The HAZWOPER 24-Hour Course for All Industries aims to raise awareness among participants about common workplace hazards associated with HAZWOPER sites. It covers best practices and controls to reduce on-site incidents. Participants will delve into essential topics, including:
- A review of OSHA, HAZWOPER sites, and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)
- Introduction to common hazards at HAZWOPER sites
- Identification and evaluation of site hazards to implement correct controls
- Common training requirements for various HAZWOPER operations and environments, including trenches, excavations, and confined spaces
- Best practices for working near vehicles, mobile and mechanized equipment
- Importance of workplace ergonomics
- Identification and mitigation of common hazards, including heat and cold stress, hand and power tools, and tasks specific to industries involved in hazardous waste operations, including remediation
- Material handling safety, including the management of drums, containers, and compressed gas cylinders
- Strategies for equipment decontamination
- Requirements of the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and management of safety and health programs
- Key elements of the HAZWOPER Standard
Upon completing the 24-Hour HAZWOPER online training course and the requisite site-specific training, participants will be equipped to work in accordance with OSHA’s HAZWOPER Regulation. This preparation enables them to identify and address hazards, contributing to the maintenance of a safe work environment.
Who should take this course?
This 24-Hour course satisfies the initial training requirements specified by 29 CFR 1910.120(e) for workers, supervisors, and managers with limited exposure to hazards within permissible and/or published exposure limits. It is designed for individuals such as:
- Those who intermittently visit the worksite to perform specific tasks like ground water monitoring or land/geophysical surveying.
- Individuals consistently working at monitored, fully characterized sites where:
- Hazard exposure levels remain below permissible and/or published limits.
- Respirators are not required.
- There are no hazards or known risks of emergencies.
- Workers who are not regularly engaged in cleanup, treatment, storage, or disposal of hazardous substances (as defined in 40 CFR 261.3 and 49 CFR 171.8). This includes those not using respirators on the job and not likely to be exposed to hazardous materials or site health hazards beyond permissible and/or published limits.
It is important to note that this course is not suitable for workers regularly involved in activities like cleanup, treatment, storage, or disposal of hazardous substances, those required to wear respirators, and individuals likely to be exposed to hazardous materials and site health hazards exceeding permissible and/or published limits.
